Elassona, the capital of the homonymous and the largest province of Greece with 52 villages, has its origins in the great city of ancient Perraivos, ancient Olossona, and Homer often refers to it as the White City because of the chalk quarries that existed in the region. The city troops participated in the war of Troy.

It is located in the northwestern part of the prefecture of Larissa in the foothills of Mount Olympus, the mythical mountain of the gods and the highest mountain in Greece.

Elassona is divided by the river Elassonitis into two districts, the Varosi which is located at the foot of the hill of the Monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa, one of the attractions of the region, and the Bazaar, the new city, on the right side of the river. The two regions are connected by four bridges and a particularly interesting 15th century arched stone bridge.

The province of Elassona borders with the prefectures of Pieria, Kozani, Grevena, Trikala and serves as a communication hub of the county to the north of Greece. Nowadays Elassona is famous for its dairy products (PDO feta cheece and PDO kasseri cheese), its lamb and tsipouro production and the rich in livestock area.

Having the city of Elassona as the starting point, visitors may plan their trips to Mount Olympus and visit the religious monuments of the region, the Natural History Museum and the wonderful villages of the province.
